10 Habits of People Who Handle Stress Better
KB pub•08/09/2026•3 分钟阅读•2 个月前更新

Stress is a normal part of life. Work, relationships, money, health, unexpected events and everyday responsibilities can all make us feel overwhelmed from time to time. But people respond to stress differently. Some find it difficult to recover after a hard day. Others experience the same difficult situations but seem to regain their balance more quickly. It is not necessarily about personality. Habits can make a real difference.
1. They don't try to solve everything at once
When problems pile up, it is easy to feel completely overwhelmed.
People who cope well with pressure often break large problems into smaller tasks.
Instead of thinking:
“I have to fix my whole life.” They ask: “What can I do today?”
2. They don't treat sleep as wasted time
Poor sleep can affect mood, memory, attention and our ability to cope with pressure.
Sleep is therefore not something we should only enjoy after everything else is finished.
It is part of normal recovery.
3. They stay physically active
Physical activity does not have to mean intense workouts.
Walking, cycling, swimming, stretching or simply moving more throughout the day can all become part of a healthy routine.
Consistency matters more than athletic performance.
4. They know how to say “no”
Constantly agreeing to other people's requests can lead to overload.
Saying no does not make someone selfish.
Sometimes it is simply a way of protecting your time and energy.
5. They maintain supportive relationships
We do not have to deal with every difficult situation alone.
Social support can help people cope with stressful experiences. The APA describes social support as assistance and emotional comfort that can help people manage different kinds of stressors.
Sometimes one honest conversation can change the way we see a problem.
6. They take short breaks
When we feel stressed, we often want to get everything done as quickly as possible.
But a short pause can help restore attention.
Go outside.
Drink some water.
Sit without your phone for a few minutes.
Take a few slow breaths.
A break will not solve the problem, but it may help you approach it more calmly.
7. They accept that they cannot control everything
We can control our own decisions and actions.
But we cannot completely control other people's behaviour, the weather, the economy or what will happen tomorrow.
Accepting this can prevent us from wasting energy fighting things we cannot change.
8. They reduce constant information overload
News, notifications and social media can create the feeling that we always need to be available.
Creating periods without notifications can give your attention a much-needed break.
Even a few quiet hours can feel surprisingly refreshing.
9. They make room for ordinary pleasures
You do not always need a holiday or a major trip to feel better.
A walk, music, a book, a favourite hobby, a good meal or a conversation with someone you care about can provide a sense of recovery.
These moments may seem small, but they can make a meaningful difference to everyday well-being.
10. They know when to ask for help
Handling stress well does not mean handling everything alone.
If stress becomes persistent and starts seriously affecting sleep, work, relationships or everyday life, professional support may be worth considering.
Asking for help is not a sign of weakness.
It is a sensible way of taking care of yourself.
The bottom line
People who handle stress well do not necessarily have lives without problems.
They simply have ways of recovering when difficult periods come.
We cannot completely remove stress from life.
But we can learn not to let it take over every part of it.
And we do not have to begin with dramatic changes.
Sometimes one small habit is enough:
go to bed a little earlier tonight, take a walk tomorrow, and say no to one thing that is already taking more energy than you have to give.
Big changes often begin with small decisions.
