Right now, I'm primarily studying subjects for my computer science major. This includes topics like Data Structures and Algorithms, Operating Systems, and Discrete Mathematics. I'm also taking a general education course in Economics, which has its own set of concepts and theories to learn.
My typical study routine is pretty inconsistent, to be honest. When an exam is approaching, I'll usually dedicate a few hours each evening to studying. I tend to reread my notes and textbook chapters multiple times. I also make flashcards for key terms and definitions, and I'll try to do some practice problems from the textbook. Sometimes, I'll watch online videos related to the topic if I'm really struggling to understand something. I don't really have a set schedule outside of exam periods; it's more reactive.
My main goal is definitely to pass my exams with a solid understanding of the material. I'm not just aiming for a passing grade; I want to genuinely grasp the concepts so I can apply them later, especially in my major. I'm also hoping to develop better study habits that will serve me well throughout my academic career and beyond. Ultimately, I want to feel confident in my knowledge, not just that I've memorized enough to get by.
The biggest challenge is that sometimes I feel like I'm putting in a lot of hours but not retaining the information as well as I'd like. I might ace a quiz but then struggle to recall the same concepts a week later. Another difficulty is that I tend to procrastinate, and then I end up cramming, which I suspect isn't the most effective long-term strategy. I also find it hard to stay motivated when I'm studying alone and don't have anyone to bounce ideas off of or to check my understanding with.
Honestly, my primary way of assessing effectiveness is by looking at my grades on quizzes and exams. If I get a good grade, I tend to assume my method worked for that particular topic. Beyond that, it's a bit of a gut feeling – if I feel like I understood the material reasonably well during the study session, I consider it somewhat effective. I don't really have a structured way of tracking progress or identifying specific weaknesses in my approach.
